1. lowland between hills or mountains and usually having a river or stream flowing along its bottom. SYNONYM(S): vale, dale, glen, dell.
2. a wide region of generally flat, low country drained by a great river system: »

3. any hollow or structure like a valley, especially a trough between waves.
4. Figurative. a place or condition marked by depression, darkness, or sorrow: »

5. Architecture. a depression formed by the meeting of two sloping sides of a roof, or a roof and a wall; gutter.
